Details 20-bed PICU within a women's and children's hospital, with an average daily census of approximately 15 patients Patient population includes congenital heart disease, DKA, respiratory conditions, neurosurgery, tracheostomies, ventilator management, G-tubes, and may include adult patients ICU nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:1–2; stepdown ratio is 1:3 RNs are required to titrate drips, including sedation protocols (Fentanyl, Versed, Precedex) and vasoactive drugs per physician orders Respiratory therapy manages ventilators, CPAP, and BiPAP on the unit Telemetry is monitored off-unit; all patients are on monitors with central monitoring at the ICU and stepdown desk Charting is done via Epic (experience required) 12-hour shifts on a rotating day/night schedule (7a–7p and 7p–7a) Self-scheduling is available; block scheduling is possible provided unit needs are met Minimum of 2 full weekends (Friday–Sunday) required per 4-week scheduling period No on-call or standby requirement Floating is required within the children's hospital, including L&D, NICU, and acute pediatrics, at normal unit ratios Requirements Active WV or compact RN license required Current BLS and PALS certifications required Minimum 2 years of PICU experience required Comfort with titrating sedation and vasoactive drips required Comfort caring for adult patients is required, as the unit may occasionally accept adult patients Epic EMR experience required Driver's license address must reflect a residence more than 50 miles from the facility 2 supervisor/peer references required for consideration (including a supervisor reference from any perm facility worked in the last 12 months) Skills checklist completed within the past year required for consideration Copies of certifications and driver's license required for consideration COVID vaccination required (Moderna or Pfizer 2-dose series, or single-dose J&J); medical or religious exemptions may be requested Additional Information Orientation includes Epic training, nursing skills orientation (NSO), competency and equipment review with a clinical preceptor, and 3 mentored shifts in the PICU A charge nurse is assigned depending on staffing, with efforts made to have a free charge when possible; a free house supervisor is available at all times Pediatrician, resident, and APP are present in-house 24/7 with a call room on the unit Nurse aides are present on all shifts to assist with feedings, fingerstick blood sugars (FSBS), equipment needs, and admission prep Travelers are expected to work holidays and will be incorporated into the permanent staff holiday rotation Scrub color requirement: dark gray (pewter) Candidates who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have been away for at least 2 years before being considered Travelers may not work within the WVU system for longer than 1 cumulative year; a 2-year break is required once that threshold is reached First-time travelers are not explicitly excluded, but 2 years of PICU experience is a hard requirement American Traveler Job ID P-681317.
